MagSafe Phone Grip: Review of the Ohsnap Snap 4 Luxe

If you want both a grip on the back of your phone for ergonomics and MagSafe charging for convenience, you might think there are no good options. Well, finally, there is — the Snap Grip Luxe combines both in an incredibly slim and clever design.

It’s truly the best of both worlds — you have a better grasp on your phone, so you won’t drop it; you have a built-in stand for watching videos anywhere you go; and you can still use your MagSafe chargers or even battery packs. You can freely detach it and put it on a different phone case if you want.

Cleverest of all, it’s only 2.5mm thin, so it doesn’t add any more bulk to the back than the camera bump your phone already has.

Ohsnap Snap Grip Luxe Review: A MagSafe phone grip

This is the fourth version of the Snap Grip Luxe, which is also called the Snap 4 Luxe, depending on where you look. Ohsnap makes a variety of other accessories, from wallets, mounts and cases — and a game controller in development — but the Snap Grip is the company’s real innovation.

Design

The design is a relatively slim aluminum ring with a plastic, legally distinct, don’t-call-it-a-PopSocket grip in the middle. It’s only a few millimeters thin — thinner than the camera bump.

The inner plastic piece flips up similarly to a PopSocket, the name brand phone grip accessory. There are two divots on the back; put a little pressure there with your finger. Little metal origami arms unfold, and the plastic piece pops out as a grip for your hands.

The metal ring looks really nice. It seems like a natural part of your phone when it’s attached. It has a soft texture and rounded edges so that it feels comfortable in the hand. The plastic circle piece on the back looks surprisingly thin, yet feels completely sturdy, with very little bend to it.

It comes in a few colors to match every style of iPhone: stone, lavender, midnight blue, obsidian black, dusty rose and pure silver. I got pure silver, because as I have written about many times before, to my eyes, silver and black is the iconic Apple color scheme.

A grip for your hand

With the grip popped out, you can hold it in two different ways: by wrapping two fingers around the arms (left) or by squeezing one finger through the middle (right). I came to prefer the latter, because it feels more secure; it keeps your phone attached to your hand passively. Although, this will be less comfortable if you have bigger fingers or if you have long nails.

With some practice, you can pop out the grip and thread your finger through the arms entirely one-handed. The pop grip also spins, so you can quickly rotate your phone between portrait and landscape. Or just fidget with it for fun, kind of like the Digital Crown on the Apple Watch.

It’s a clever design and a great way to hold onto your phone securely, like if you’re walking down a busy sidewalk — when you really don’t want it clattering onto the concrete.

A stand for your phone

The pop grip has another trick up its sleeve. A notch in the back of the ring lets you fashion the grip into a stand. You can set it up at an angle on a table or kitchen counter, for playing a YouTube video or reading a recipe.

The angle doesn’t always work out when I try to prop my phone up vertically. It’s a little precarious. It works at just the right angle, but any bump will knock it over. This will vary based on the size of phone you have, how thick your phone case is, or if you use your phone naked.

Horizontally, it’s flawless. You can prop it up at two different angles, roughly 35° or 55°. It’s perfect for viewing from across the room or right in front of you in bed.

Putting the grip in stand mode is actually a secret third way to hold it in your hand too; I find it pretty comfortable to rest on my middle finger when it’s in my hand.

MagSafe compatibility

A big benefit to the Snap Grip is that it’s compatible with MagSafe chargers. It has its own magnets that strengthen the grip; if you align it well on the back of your phone, it’ll charge using any MagSafe stand or battery pack.

You can stick a MagSafe wallet on it, too. The extra grip strength makes sure it won’t fall off as easily. Although unfortunately, the (limited) Find My capability doesn’t work through the Snap Grip.

If there’s a downside, it’s that in my opinion, the magnets are a little too strong. It’s intended to allow you to stick your phone to anything, like a fridge or a piece of workout equipment. But that makes it much stronger than your standard MagSafe-certified accessory.

The first time you put it on a MagSafe stand, it feels like it’s glued on. It feels like it takes roughly three times as much force to pull it off. You learn to take your phone off the charger by twisting it off from the edge rather than pulling it straight.

If you have an iPhone 16e, which doesn’t support Apple MagSafe but does have regular Qi charging, this product is essential. It can’t charge your phone at MagSafe speeds, but it does bring back some manner of compatibility with all those accessories.

Reattachable at any time

The Snap Grip Luxe attaches itself to your phone through a sticky material on the back. But it isn’t permanently attached; if you want a different phone case, you can unstick and reapply it if you want. Just take a flathead screwdriver or butter knife under the edge, and it’ll pop off.

You just need to run it under a little water, and let it completely dry; it should be sticky enough to put back on again. I tested this myself. I initially had it on my iPhone 16 Pro, moved it over to the iPhone 16e when I reviewed that, put it back in the box for a little bit, and recently put it back on my 16 Pro with little trouble. At first, it didn’t spin as smoothly as it used to, but that came back over time.

I’ve always recommended buying a new case for people with new iPhone FOMO, because it’s a cheaper way to feel like you’ve got something new. So it’s nice you don’t have to throw out your Snap Grip if you need to transfer it.

Conclusion

Compared to the official PopSocket, I’ll concede that the design of the Snap Grip Luxe isn’t as fun. But it’s far more practical — it’s grippable in more different ways, it’s far slimmer and it’s far more compatible with MagSafe accessories. And it’s comparable in price.

If you like having a phone grip, and your MagSafe accessories, I think this product is a no-brainer.
