I’ve always been able to update iOS software using direct connect to the computer via cable and Finder until now. I prefer to use this method rather than wireless updating.
Yesterday, I connected my iPhone 15 Pro to the computer via USB-C cable as usual and checked for an update, which is iOS 26.1 Tahoe. I got this message:
iOS 26.1 Tahoe was not detected as being the latest iOS version. I called Apple support and was told that I first had to update my MacBook Pro to macOS Tahoe 26.1 in order for updating via cable to be possible. Support told me this 2 different times. I then updated MacBook Pro to macOS Tahoe 26.1 and tried updating my iPad Pro via USB-C from 3 different ports and 2 different cables, via WiFi and Cat5 connections, and got this message:
I’m using MacBook Pro 2023 M3 max, iPad Pro 3rd generation on 18.7.2 iOS. All devices were restarted multiple times during update attempts; in regular mode and safe mode.
So why isn’t Tahoe being detected, and how to get MacBook Pro to detect and update to the latest software via USB C?
From my wife’s MacBook Pro which is on latest macOS Tahoe 26.1:
From my MacBook Pro iPad connected via usb and on cell hotspot service after unplugging and refreshing and renewing all cable modem & wifi devices.
