Bad Monkey trailer heralds latest comedy from Ted Lasso creator

Curiously, a furry primate only shows up in glimpses in Wednesday’s new  trailer for Bill Lawrence’s new Apple TV+ comedy series Bad Monkey. Not counting glib ex-detective Vince Vaughn, that is. Lawrence brought us vaunted comedy smash hit Ted Lasso, by the way.

The show, based on Carl Hiaasen’s New York Times-bestselling novel, debuts on Apple TV+ on August 14.

Vince Vaughn brings bad wordplay in Bad Monkey trailer on Apple TV+

Judging by the new Bad Monkey trailer, most of the comedy in the 10-episode Apple Original series involves Vaughn making fun of how people talk. And there’s plenty of action, too. He plays a Miami detective who go fired for recklessness (and glibness, apparently, as he says at one point). But a sheriff gives him the job of transporting the severed arm of a possible murder victim. Hijinks ensue, of course, and amid the mayhem, maybe he’ll get his job back if he can prove the arm’s former owner got whacked.

The show comes from award-winning executive producer Bill Lawrence, already a superstar on Apple TV+ for comedies Ted Lasso and Shrinking. Vaughn also executive produces.

Here’s what Apple TV+ says what you should expect:

Based on Carl Hiaasen’s New York Times bestselling novel and enduring cult favorite, Bad Monkey tells the story of Andrew Yancy (Vaughn), who has been bounced from the Miami Police Department and is now a health inspector in the Keys. But after stumbling upon a case that begins with a human arm fished up by tourists, he realizes that if he can prove murder, he’ll be back in. He just needs to get past a trove of Floridian oddballs and one bad monkey.

We expect to see much more of the monkey in the actual show. And take note in the trailer below, apparently Vaughn stands about 6-foot-7 if you count the hair.

Bill Lawrence developed and show-runs Bad Monkey, which hails from Warner Bros. Television. In addition to Lawrence and Vaughn, Jeff Ingold, Matt Tarses (Scrubs), Marcos Siega and Liza Katzer executive produce the show.

And in addition to Vaughn, the cast includes some welcome stars, like Rob Delaney from Catastrophe and, in a guest appearance, Zach Braff from Scrubs and those T-Mobile commercials. The show also includes L. Scott Caldwell (The Fugitive), Meredith Hagner (Search Party), Natalie Martinez (La Promesa del Retorno), Alex Moffat (Saturday Night Live, Holidate), Michelle Monaghan (Gone Baby Gone), Ronald Peet (First Reformed), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), John Ortiz (American Fiction), Ashley Nicole Black (Ted Lasso), Scott Glenn (The Leftovers) and Charlotte Lawrence in her television debut.
