You’re going to love this homemade blueberry compote! Made with just three ingredients, this fresh blueberry fruit compote is the perfect topping for ice cream, yogurt, or waffles.

We are blessed with over 25 mature blueberry bushes, and after eating our fill of fresh blueberries (I am convinced our insides turn into jam in the summer), we love to make a batch of this homemade blueberry compote.
It’s beyond simple to make, easily customizable, and as an added bonus, you can even freeze it to enjoy once summer ends and “The Big Dark” returns.

The final texture of the finished blueberry compote is entirely up to you. You’ll see that I cooked mine down until it was quite thick and most of the blueberries had burst.
If you prefer yours a bit “chunkier”, simply cook it for less time. Taste it as you go to make sure that the flavor AND texture are exactly how you want it.

While delicious on ice cream or as part of a grazing or cheese board, I prefer to enjoy mine on plain yogurt (my favorite homemade recipe is this Instant Pot cold start yogurt) or dolloped on top of our homemade frozen berry cake.
Pro Tips/Recipe Notes
- During the simmering time, if the mixture seems a little dry, add 1 tablespoon of water at a time to keep your blueberry compote from burning.
- I use lemon juice and zest for this recipe, but I have also used lime before and love the flavor it gives this fruit sauce.
- To freeze – allow the blueberry fruit compote to fully cool and then transfer to freezer-safe containers. I like to freeze individual servings in these Souper Cube trays and then transfer to reusable freezer storage.
