Platonic season 2 streams with laughs, plucked heartstrings

Here’s your chance to see anew how platonic relationships between men and women can quickly turn into minefields. Season two of Apple TV+ comedy Platonic, starring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, started streaming Wednesday with its first two episodes.

The two stars head up other successful shows on the streaming service — The Studio for Rogen and Physical for Byrne. The new season of Platonic — you can watch the trailer below — brings them together again and looks familiar after season one. We get laughs from embarrassing moments and physical comedy, but also have our heartstrings plucked a bit as the two lovable losers struggle with life.

Platonic season 2: What to expect in new set of comedy’s episodes

Co-created, directed and co-written by Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, Platonic season two continues following the on-again, off-again best friends. They navigate fresh mid-life challenges, much like they did in the reasonably well-liked season one. The new season promises to explore complex themes around work pressures, wedding planning and relationship crises while maintaining the show’s signature blend of humor and heart.

Is it actually funny? Sometimes. But sometimes the sweetness mixed in with the goofiness feels a little forced, and the writing doesn’t necessarily make up for it.

According to Apple TV+, the duo will attempt to be each other’s support system (aka, “rocks”), but as the synopsis cleverly notes, “sometimes rocks break things.” That hints at the inevitable complications that arise when even the strongest friendships face real-world pressures.

The returning cast includes Luke Macfarlane and Carla Gallo reprising their roles, while the new season introduces an impressive lineup of guest stars. Comedy veterans Aidy Bryant, Kyle Moone and Beck Bennett — all Saturday Night Live alums — will make appearances, alongside rising star Milo Manheim, adding fresh energy to the established dynamic, Apple TV+ said.

Apple TV+ comedy powerhouses

For Apple TV+ subscribers, Platonic represents just one piece of the platform’s expanding comedy portfolio. Rogen himself has become something of a fixture on the service, currently starring in Apple TV+’s celebrated hit comedy The Studio, which recently made Emmy history by landing 23 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series. The achievement makes it the most-nominated freshman comedy series ever, highlighting Apple TV+’s growing influence in the comedy space.

Rose Byrne also maintains strong ties to Apple TV+, starring in the platform’s dark comedy Physical, further cementing the streaming service’s commitment to high-quality comedic content. But Cult of Mac’s reviewer lost his taste for that one by season three.

The production continues under Sony Pictures Television, where Stoller’s Global Solutions maintains an overall deal. The executive producer lineup includes Byrne, Stoller, Delbanco and Conor Welch, along with Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver representing Point Grey Pictures.

This collaborative approach has clearly paid dividends. Platonic earned critical acclaim during its first season for its authentic portrayal of adult friendship and the challenges of maintaining meaningful connections in middle age.
