battery – MacBook M1 only charges on the first physical plug-in after reboot

Having this bizarre problem with the MacBook Pro M1 14in 2021 that feels like a software issue – it will only charge when plugged in for the first time after a fresh restart or hibernation. After the cable has been disconnected and re-plugged back in, it will not charge again until the MacBook is fully restarted. The cable does register and the orange charging light is on for Magsafe, but there is no actual power draw (0-2W) and the battery display reads: “Power Source: Adapter, Battery is not Charging”.

Some of the obvious notes out of the way:

  • battery at normal health, 86% max capacity, 188 cycles, sits at a normal temp, about 29.2 °C
  • battery optimization is off (and I have tried toggling/untoggling this)
  • tested with 4x different chargers, including a 65W, 70W, 85W (brand-new), 100W, along with a brand-new magsafe cable and 3x different 100W-rated USB-C cables. They all exhibit the same behavior, which is a normal charge (delivering ~65W or so) upon restart, then after a disconnection and reconnect, only 0-2W.
  • Tahoe 26.0.1

I had found a couple of old threads indicating it was a macOS 12.4/12.5 issue, but neither seems to have any resolution:

Although the “hibernate” trick via the terminal does work, which to me indicates some kind of software check preventing the charger from registering.
