network – Brother MFC-J1205W AirPrint printer won’t print on macOS Tahoe 26.0.1 — jobs stuck in Print Center

Printer/OS:

Brother MFC-J1205W (AirPrint only)

macOS Tahoe 26.0.1

Printer IP: 10.0.0.186, same Wi-Fi subnet

Problem

Printer does not appear in System Settings → Printers & Scanners by default

When added via IPP or Bonjour:

macOS defaults to Generic PostScript Printer

Print jobs move from Idle → In Use in Print Center but never print

Steps tried

  1. Added via IPP (10.0.0.186, queue /ipp/print) → shows as Generic PostScript → jobs hang

  2. Bonjour discovery (dnssd://) → printer visible but AirPrint not listed

  3. Checked AirPrint advertisement:

dns-sd -B _ipp._tcp
Result: Brother MFC-J1205W → printer is broadcasting AirPrint

  1. Tried lpadmin with AirPrint/“everywhere”:

lpadmin -p Brother_MFC_J1205W -E -v ipp://10.0.0.186/ipp/print -m everywhere

Result: Shows in Print Center, never prints, not visible in Settings.

  1. Tested Terminal print:

echo "Test print" > /tmp/test_print.txt && lp -d "Brother_MFC_J1205W" /tmp/test_print.txt

Result: Job appears in Print Center, never prints.

  1. Other attempts: Reset printing system, power cycle printer, verify IP/subnet → no success

Current status

Printer broadcasts _ipp._tcp successfully

macOS fails to bind printer to AirPrint driver

Jobs hang in Print Center, GUI does not show printer reliably

No macOS driver is provided by Brother; AirPrint only

Question

How can I get Brother MFC-J1205W AirPrint-only printers to print reliably on macOS Tahoe 26?

Is there a manual binding procedure?

Are there workarounds for the Generic PostScript / In Use issue?
