Wiseman will assume his role pending the presentation of his credentials. As ambassador, he will contribute to advancing Canada-US priorities, including secure borders, strengthened trade and investment relationships, and cooperation on global challenges.
The appointment comes as Canada prepares for a joint review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, scheduled for July 1, 2026. The review marks the sixth anniversary of CUSMA’s implementation and provides an opportunity to extend the agreement for another 16 years if all parties agree.
CUSMA allows more than 85% of Canada-US trade to be tariff-free, with more than $3.5 billion in goods and services crossing the border daily.
Carney thanked outgoing ambassador Kirsten Hillman for her service. Hillman “has resolutely defended Canadian values and interests and promoted a stronger future for Canadian workers who depend on stable trade, families who count on a safe and secure border, and businesses who must navigate new global uncertainties,” the statement noted.
The federal government launched public consultations in September on the CUSMA review, following an initial round in 2024. Feedback from those consultations is informing Canada’s preparations for the joint review.
